Most people's first question when presented with a gorgeous Herkimer diamond is: What is a Herkimer Diamond?
Well, a Herkimer Diamond is the name given to the doubly terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer County, New York and surrounding areas. These crystals have the typical hexagonal habit of quartz, however, instead of having a termination on one end they are doubly terminated. This is a result of the crystals growing with very little or no contact with their host rock. Such doubly terminated crystals are very rare and this is part of what makes Herkimer Diamonds so popular with mineral collectors.
These crystals have 18 natural facets giving them a ton of depth and sparkle! They are also mined ethically and traded fairly, standards of practice very important to VK Designs (and us, Rad Gals.) The studs are available in recycled silver, raw or oxidized, or recycled 24K gold and large or small size. (Rad Gal, Kyja is wearing the large 24K in the photograph)

VK Designs demonstrates fresh thinking in the field of metalsmithing with a foundation in traditional techniques and high quality craftsmanship. Only using conflict free diamonds and all recycled metals, so shop with confidence. 5% of each sale goes to support the "No Dirty Gold" Campaign. Why recycled metal? Gold and silver mining is without a doubt one of the world's dirtiest industries: it uses cyanide, generates heaps of waste, and leaves a long-lasting scar on landscapes and communities. 80% of all gold is used to make jewelry. For more info visit: www.nodirtygold.org. VK Designs are dedicated to using ethically obtained materials. Valerie Kasinskas of VK Designs has been trained by master metalsmiths & holds a bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.
